David Garlick Essay Competition 2021

Year 13 Philosophy student Laura has won the 2021 David Garlick Essay Competition, administered by the Department of Theology and Religious Education at the University of Nottingham. Of Laura’s winning essay, entitled ‘Apophaticism as the Ultimate Way of Reaching Out Towards the Divine’, the judges commented, ‘This is an excellent essay on a difficult subject with great use of scholarship’. Our congratulations to Laura on the fantastic achievement.
 

Purcell President Sir Simon Rattle

Congratulations to Purcell President and celebrated conductor Sir Simon Rattle and his wife mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená who have received honorary doctorates from the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. They accepted their awards at the Eagle Theatre.
 

Jack Liebeck at the Brundibar Arts Festival 2022

Violinist and alumnus Jack Liebeck will perform in the Closing Concert at the Brundibar Arts Festival 2022 on Wednesday 2nd February in Newcastle University Kings Hall.

This year’s Festival is dedicated to inspirational women who showed great courage during the Holocaust, and will be showcasing the work of some incredible female composers.

Alumni Big Band in Valentine’s Day Special

Alumnus and Purcell Practice Supervisor Sam Every will perform with his band, Sam Every’s Big Band, in a Valentine’s Day Special at the Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club (London) on 13th February 2022.

Formed in 2019, the band has gone from strength to strength, and joining them for this Valentine’s Day performance is acclaimed jazz vocalist, James Hudson. The reduced big band setup, will serenade the audience with classic rat pack hits and new arrangements of some of jazz’s finest love songs.
