UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge 2021

Last year, over 250,000 students from more than 3,000 schools across the UK participated in the Intermediate Maths Challenge aimed at Years 9, 10 and 11. Students had 60 minutes to answer 25 varied multiple choice mathematical problems. Those who performed in the top 5% of the country achieved a gold certificate, students in the top 10% achieved silver and those in the top 25% achieved a bronze certificate. The very highest scorers were invited to participate in the follow-on Olympiad competition.

The Maths Department are delighted to announce that the following results are our best in the competition to date, and that all four Gold Medal winners have qualified for the follow-on Olympiad competition.

Following last week’s National Youth Orchestra feature, we were thrilled to hear that bassoonist and Head Girl Eva (Year 13) has also re-enrolled from NYO 2020 to join the NYO 2021 intake. Our congratulations to Eva.

Lunchtime Recitals and Evening Concerts

To hear the school alive with music again has been a wonderful thing, and all at Purcell are grateful to the staff and students who go that extra mile to put on our regular lunchtime recitals and evening concerts.

We have been particularly fortunate this week with standout performances of Bach and Chopin from pianist Benji (Year 11) and Bruch from violinist Jessica (Year 11), as well as Glazunov on the viola from Danya (Year 10), Strayhorn from pianist Cole (Year 9) and Vieuxtemps from violinist Polina (Year 9). These were in addition to the packed programmes from our Middle School and Senior School cohorts across two evenings of fantastic music.

Our thanks to those students who performed, and also to those who supported their peers by providing such a receptive audience.
