Purcell alumnus, Joseph Phibbs has won a British Composer Award for his orchestral work, Rivers to the Sea. The work was commissioned by the Philharmonia under Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Joseph studied at The Purcell School, before continuing his education at King’s College London, where he graduated with First Class Honours, and Cornell University.  He is one of the most successful composers of his generation, and has written works for many leading orchestras and musicians. He was the youngest ever composer commissioned to write for the Last Night of the Proms. Currently a director of the Britten Estate Ltd, he teaches composition part-time at The Purcell School and King’s College London.

The Purcell School commissioned Joseph to write a piece for its 50th Anniversary in 2012, Towards Purcell, which was performed at the Royal Festival Hall. Clips from this and Rivers to the Sea can be heard on his website: www.josephphibbs.com
