Purcell Student Sings at York Minster

Beulah (Year 13, voice) enjoyed a special choral experience during the half-term break, with the Choir of Christ Church Southgate for a series of services at York Minster.

Beulah, who is also a choral scholar under William Waine, Director of Music at Christ Church Southgate, took part in four services over the weekend while the cathedral’s own choir was on its break.

A wonderful opportunity to sing in one of the country’s most celebrated cathedrals and gain further experience as a choral musician.

Purcell Violinist Performs with Vanbrugh Ensemble

Congratulations to Chaeyu (Year 12, violin), who performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Vanbrugh Ensemble on Saturday 31 October.

The performance marked an important milestone for Chaeyu, as it was her first opportunity to perform a complete concerto with an orchestra – a memorable experience for any young musician.

Chaeyu studies violin at Purcell with Nathaniel Vallois. Very well done, Chaeyu!

Purcell Pianist Wins Gregynog Young Musician Competition

Huge congratulations to Luca (Year 12, piano), who was crowned winner of the 22nd Gregynog Young Musician Competition on Saturday 31 October.

Open to musicians under 18, the competition brought together 20 semi-finalists across all instrumental disciplines. Luca progressed to the final, where he performed Rachmaninoff’s Étude-Tableau, Op. 39 No. 5, Ravel’s Ondine and the final movement of Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3, competing against five other finalists for the overall title.

The adjudicator praised Luca’s performance as “spaciously conceived” and “very intelligently judged”, highlighting his sensitivity, musical decisions and commitment to the repertoire. He concluded that “everything you did was utterly convincing”.

Luca studies piano at Purcell with Florian Mitrea. A fantastic achievement – very well done, Luca!

Purcell Brass Players Celebrate Success at Elland Slow Melody Contest

We’re delighted to share a little more about the recent success of Glyn (Year 9, trumpet) and Skye (Year 13, trombone) at the Elland Silver Band Slow Melody Contest.

Performing the second movement of Flor Peeters’s Sonata for Trumpet, Glyn won first prize in the Under 14 category and the overall Best Cornet trophy, successfully defending both titles he won in 2025.

Glyn was later joined by his sister Skye and fellow members of Elland Youth Band, Tom and Esther, to compete in the open quartet category. The group secured an impressive third prize in a strong field of senior ensembles.

Glyn studies classical trumpet with Tony Cross, while Skye studies classical trombone with Ruth Molins. Congratulations to them both!

Purcell Clarinettist Receives English Schools Orchestra Award

Congratulations to Samsara (Year 12, clarinet), who has received the John McIntosh Award for Outstanding Contribution from the English Schools Orchestra (ESO).

The award recognises a student who makes a particularly positive contribution to the orchestra, acknowledging not only musical commitment but also teamwork and leadership. Samsara was delighted to receive this recognition following her participation in this year’s course, which included performances of Wagenaar’s Levenszomer, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Scriabin’s Symphony No. 2.

A lovely recognition of Samsara’s contribution to the ensemble. She studies clarinet at Purcell with Stephen Williams. Very well done!

Purcell Pianist Gives Recital at The Spire, Farnham

Luca (Year 11, piano) gave a solo recital at The Spire in Farnham on Friday 23 October, performing to an audience of around 60 people.

The programme spanned a wide range of piano repertoire, from Haydn and Chopin to Ligeti, Debussy and Liszt. Highlights included Ligeti’s Arc-en-ciel, Chopin’s Fourth Ballade and Liszt’s Dante Sonata.

Luca’s performance was warmly received, with many generous compliments from audience members, including representatives of the Tilford Bach Society and Conservatoire Concerts of Godalming.

The recital followed a busy period for Luca, who recently returned from Germany, where he had a lesson with Professor Grigory Gruzman in Frankfurt. During the summer, he also won the Pianale Prize for the greatest learning progress among participants under 20, earning an invitation to return to Fulda to perform Mozart with the HessenClassicPlayers, conducted by Christoph Gotthardt.

His programme included works by Vaughan Williams, J.S. Bach, Olivier Messiaen and Felix Mendelssohn, taking in Bach’s Trio Sonata in E-flat major, Messiaen’s Le banquet céleste and Mendelssohn’s Organ Sonata No. 4 in B-flat major.

A wonderful opportunity for Arthur to share his musicianship in a concert setting and explore some of the great works written for the instrument. He studies the organ at Purcell with Tom Winpenny.

Purcell Bassoonist Takes Part in International Masterclass

Lilly G (Year 13, bassoon) spent the first week of half term in Germany, having been accepted onto a week-long course at the Forum Artium Academy for International Masterclasses in Georgsmarienhütte.

The course was led by Professor Christian Kunert of the Musikhochschule Hamburg and included individual and chamber music lessons, as well as a specialist reed-making workshop. It also provided an opportunity for Lilly to meet and work alongside fellow students and young professional musicians.

For the Academy’s closing concert, Lilly was selected to perform in a bassoon chamber group and was also given the opportunity to present a solo performance of Henri Dutilleux’s Sarabande et Cortège.

Lilly greatly enjoyed the experience and is grateful to Professor Kunert for his guidance and advice. She studies bassoon at Purcell with Joanne Baillie-Stark.

The Golden Frame Award: October Winner

The Purcell School’s Golden Frame Award continues to celebrate outstanding student artwork, with Reeka (Year 13) announced as the winner for October.

Established by the Art Department at the beginning of this academic year, the monthly award recognises a particularly impressive piece of work, which is displayed in a golden frame within the School.

Commenting on Reeka’s winning artwork, Art Specialist Assistant Robin Collingwood praised her attention to detail and skill in both drawing and painting. The piece forms part of Reeka’s A level personal project, with the Art Department particularly impressed by the way she captured “the light and magic of the ice rink” – a fitting choice for the changing season.

Congratulations to Reeka on this well-deserved recognition!

Purcell Patron Julian Lloyd Webber Calls for Music Education for Every Child

Julian Lloyd Webber, renowned cellist, music education campaigner and Patron of The Purcell School, has renewed his call for every child to have access to music education in UK schools.

In a recent video message addressed to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Julian urged the Government to make music education available to all young people, saying: “We used to have a music education system in the UK that was the envy of the world. Now we don’t. If you truly believe in equality for our children, please seize this moment and ensure that all our schools are filled once again with the sound of music.”

Julian also recalled Mr Burnham’s visit in 2009, when he was Culture Secretary, to the In Harmony Liverpool Philharmonic programme, which Julian founded in 2008. The visit offered an opportunity to see first-hand the transformative effect that access to music-making could have on young people.

His appeal forms part of a wider campaign supported by prominent figures across the music industry, including violinist Nicola Benedetti, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and artists Elton John, Adele and Ed Sheeran. Julian also helped establish the Music Education Consortium more than 25 years ago, alongside Dame Evelyn Glennie and Sir James Galway, to campaign for universal access to music education in schools.

We are proud to have Julian’s support as Patron of The Purcell School and to share his longstanding commitment to ensuring that all young people have the opportunity to experience the benefits of music.
