BBC Young Composer Winners Begin New Music Project with BBC Concert Orchestra

Following the exciting success of the 2025 BBC Young Composer Competition, we are delighted to share an update on the next stage of the journey for our young composers.

Gerard (Class of 2026), Nemunis (Year 13) and Luca (Year 11) were named winners of their respective age categories, with Tim (Class of 2026) highly commended. As part of their prizes, the category winners embarked on bespoke development programmes, working closely with mentor composers on a project with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

We are delighted to share some photographs from the recording sessions. The resulting performances are due to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s New Music Show in October, with the exact broadcast date to be announced.

Purcell Percussionist Enjoys a Summer of Wind and Brass

Oliver (Year 11, percussion) enjoyed an exciting summer of music-making, including a short residential trip with the Hertfordshire County Youth Wind Sinfonia, where he had the opportunity to perform in the gardens of composer William Walton’s former home.

He also began rehearsing with Amersham Band ahead of the British Open Brass Band Contest – an experience he thoroughly enjoyed and is already looking forward to repeating.

Oliver studies classical percussion at Purcell with Ryan Hepburn.

Purcell Percussionist Performs at the Verbier Festival

Hannah (Year 13, percussion) spent three weeks this summer at the Verbier Festival, performing as part of its Junior Orchestra.

Playing alongside young musicians from around the world, Hannah performed in three concerts and also took the opportunity to explore the festival’s wider programme, hearing an inspiring range of musicians and repertoire.

A wonderful international experience for Hannah, who hopes to return to Verbier in the future. She studies classical percussion at Purcell with Ryan Hepburn.

Purcell Percussionist Joins National Youth Percussion Ensemble

Emil (Year 11, percussion) enjoyed a fantastic summer experience taking part in the National Youth Percussion Ensemble (NYPE) Summer Course, spending a week working with leading percussion tutors from across the UK.

The intensive course brought together young percussionists for ensemble playing, chamber music, masterclasses and specialist coaching, with the 2026 programme including sessions in orchestral percussion, timpani, drum kit, drumline and percussion ensemble.

A wonderful opportunity for Emil to develop his skills, work alongside other young percussionists and experience an intensive week of percussion-making.

Emil studies classical percussion at Purcell with Ryan Hepburn.

Purcell Violinist Performs with London Concert Sinfonia

Congratulations to Kutay (Year 12, violin) on his recent performance of the Glazunov Violin Concerto with the London Concert Sinfonia, conducted by Bogdan Skrypka.

The performance took place on Sunday 20 September at Highgate United Reformed Church, as part of ‘Slavic Idyll’, a concert celebrating the richness of the Slavic musical tradition. Kutay’s performance captivated both the audience and members of the orchestra and his musicianship has already led to further invitations to perform with other orchestras.

A special thank you to Head of Keyboard William Fong, who was there to support Kutay at the performance. Kutay continues his violin studies with Alda Dizdari.

Very well done, Kutay!

Purcell Violinist Selected for National Children’s Orchestra 2027

Congratulations to Rebecca-May (Year 8, violin), who has successfully auditioned for the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) 2027, gaining a place in its Under 13s Orchestra.

Having played with the Under 12s Orchestra this year as a first violinist, Rebecca-May is delighted to be returning to the NCO next year.

A wonderful achievement for Rebecca-May, who studies violin at Purcell with Head of Strings Alex Redington.

Purcell Harpist Performs at World Harp Congress in Toronto

We are delighted to share news of Stephanie (Year 9, harp), who was selected to perform at the Focus on Youth showcase at the 2026 World Harp Congress in Toronto, Canada, this summer.

The showcase brings together exceptional young harpists aged 22 and under from around the world. From more than 100 applicants, Stephanie was one of just 25 young harpists selected to perform.

During the Congress, Stephanie also took part in a performance with the Hong Kong Harp Chamber Harp Ensemble, led by Professor Dan Yu. Joining 11 harpists from Hong Kong at short notice, she performed a programme of Cantopop and Eastern melodies, representing Hong Kong’s musical traditions to an international audience.

Away from the stage, Stephanie took the opportunity to attend concerts, workshops and masterclasses, as well as meeting and exchanging ideas with harpists from around the world.

A wonderful international experience for Stephanie and a great opportunity to develop her performance experience and make connections within the wider harp community.

Very well done, Stephanie, who studies at Purcell under Karen Vaughan.
