The Sixth Form at The Purcell School is a vibrant and ambitious environment in which young musicians refine their artistic identity while completing advanced academic study.
Students aged 16-19 (Years 12 and 13) benefit from a carefully balanced programme that combines intensive musical training with academic qualifications designed to support progression to conservatoire, university and professional musical careers. With almost half of the School’s students in the Sixth Form, this is a community of committed young artists working at a high level and preparing for the next stage of their musical and academic journeys.
Alongside the A Level programme, The Purcell School now offers the RSL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Music Industries, providing students with an additional pathway that reflects the realities of today’s evolving music profession. Whether pursuing traditional academic study or a more industry-focused route, students develop the knowledge, independence and creative confidence needed to thrive beyond school.
Music remains at the heart of every student’s experience. Sixth Formers pursue an individual first study in instrumental performance, voice, composition or music production, alongside chamber music and ensemble work, masterclasses with leading artists and regular opportunities to perform or present their work. Academic study is designed to complement this intensive musical training, ensuring students graduate both artistically and intellectually prepared for their future.
Most students progress to leading conservatoires and universities in the UK and internationally, supported by expert guidance on auditions, applications and career development.
The Sixth Form at Purcell is therefore not simply the final stage of school life; it is a formative period in which talented young musicians grow into confident, independent artists ready for the opportunities ahead.
