Academic Pathways in the Sixth Form

Students in the Sixth Form at The Purcell School follow academic programmes that complement their intensive musical training while preparing them for the next stage of their education.

Two pathways are available, allowing students to pursue a course of study that best reflects their academic interests, musical ambitions and future goals.

A Level Programme

The A Level pathway provides a traditional academic route alongside specialist musical training.

Students normally study three A Levels, including A Level Music, which is compulsory for all Sixth Form students on this pathway. In some cases, students may choose to take a fourth subject where appropriate but this is rare and is only offered in consultation with the Head of Sixth Form and Head of Department.

A wide range of subjects is available, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Drama
  • English Literature
  • Fine Art
  • French
  • German
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Music Technology
  • Physics

This pathway offers strong preparation for university study, while also supporting applications to conservatoires and specialist music institutions.

RSL Diploma in Creative Music Industries

The RSL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Music Industries provides a practical, industry-focused pathway designed to reflect the realities of today’s music profession.

Students specialise in one of four pathways:

  • Jazz & Commercial Performance
  • Classical Performance
  • Composition
  • Music Production

The Diploma can be studied in two ways:

  • Subsidiary Diploma – taken alongside one other subject and A-Level Music
  • Extended Diploma – a full vocational qualification equivalent in size to three A Levels

Assessment is entirely coursework-based, with students developing a professional portfolio through performances, recordings, compositions and creative projects.

This pathway is particularly suited to students who wish to explore the creative and professional aspects of the music industry while continuing their musical training at Purcell.

Individual Guidance

Every student receives individual academic and musical guidance to help them choose the pathway that best supports their strengths and future ambitions.

Whether following the A Level programme or the RSL Diploma route, students benefit from the same intensive musical environment, expert teaching and extensive performance opportunities that define life at The Purcell School.
