Purcell Violinist Selected for National Children’s Orchestra for Third Year

Congratulations to Jarvis (Year 9, violin), who has once again been offered a place with the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) — marking his third consecutive year with the organisation.

Jarvis has previously performed French horn with the Under 12s Orchestra and violin with the Under 13s Orchestra. Having auditioned on both instruments again this year, he has been selected on violin, his first study at Purcell, for the Under 14s Orchestra in 2027.

Jarvis studies violin with Alda Dizdari and French horn with Timothy Ellis.

Very well done, Jarvis!

Purcell Student Performs at One Harp World and EPTA UK Conference

It has been a busy summer for Regina (Year 8, harp and piano), with opportunities to perform on both of her first-study instruments.

On 1 August, Regina performed in the Focus on Youth concert at One Harp World in Toronto, presenting music by Bernard Andrès. She also had the opportunity to meet leading harpists from around the world, including Emmanuel Ceysson, Isabelle Perrin, Isabelle Moretti, Shamim Minoo and Dan Yu.

Later in the summer, Regina returned to the piano for a recital at the EPTA UK Annual Conference at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on 30 August. Her programme included works by Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Prokofiev.

Reflecting on her summer, Regina said it was a particularly special experience to have had “wonderful opportunities to perform on both of my first-study instruments.” Regina studies harp at Purcell under Karen Vaughan and piano with Tessa Nicholson.

Purcell Harpist Gives Solo Debut in Hong Kong

We are delighted to celebrate a special milestone for Stephanie (Year 9, harp), who gave her first solo harp concert in Hong Kong this summer.

Stephanie KCY & Friends (HK vs UK) took place at the Hong Kong Fringe Club in August, featuring a varied programme of classical music, rag, jazz, improvisation and Stephanie’s own compositions. The concert explored the versatility of the harp through solo performances as well as collaborations combining harp and voice.

Stephanie was joined by Brad (Class of 2026) for a harp and horn duet, while proceeds from the concert are being donated in part to the Hong Kong Red Cross.

It was a wonderful opportunity for Stephanie to share her music with audiences in Hong Kong and to mark an exciting milestone in her development as a performer.

Congratulations to Stephanie who studies at Purcell under Karen Vaughan.

Purcell Percussionist’s Summer of Orchestral Music

We’re pleased to share some additional photographs from Emil’s (Year 11, classical percussion) musical activities over the summer, following our earlier feature.

Emil took part in the National Youth Percussion Ensemble course in Wells, where he worked with a team of leading tutors and took part in drumline and smaller ensemble repertoire. He also completed his first year with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, including a tour of Catalonia in Spain in August.

The LSSO season concluded with a concert at Fairfield Hall in London, featuring music by Rimsky-Korsakov, John Pickard, Anna Clyne and Dame Ethel Smyth.

We’re delighted to be able to share more of the many photographs from these experiences. Emil studies at Purcell with Ryan Hepburn.

Purcell Pianist Takes His Music to Japan

Luca (Year 12, piano) recently gave a recital in Japan, in the area where his Japanese family has roots. The programme was designed to introduce audiences to a broad range of classical piano music, featuring works by Chopin, Liszt, Kapustin, Ravel, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff and Schumann, alongside one of Luca’s own compositions for piano and trumpet.

The concert booklet included information about each composer, helping audiences discover more about the music they were hearing. Luca’s expressive performance and ability to create different tone colours across such varied repertoire were particularly appreciated by audience members.

Following the recital, Luca was invited by pianist and professor Masahiro Kawakami to take part in a joint concert at the Kawai Salon in Tokyo as part of the Kapustin Festival, followed by a public masterclass. He also had a private lesson with Professor Kawakami at the Tokyo College of Music, including the opportunity to look through Kapustin scores from the professor’s personal collection.

A fascinating musical experience for Luca, particularly given his interest in Kapustin’s music. He studies at Purcell with Florian Mitrea.

Repertoire will include works such as Radio Rewrite, Quartet, Nagoya Marimbas, Electric Counterpoint and Clapping Music, with student responses ranging from chamber and percussion works to electronic pieces, collaborative rewritings, and online releases.
