Purcell Cellist Selected for Kronberg Cello Masterclasses

Congratulations to Yoko (Year 12, cello), who was selected as an active participant in the 2026 Cello Masterclasses at Kronberg Academy, following an application process involving around 185 young cellists from across the world.

Taking place as part of the Kronberg Festival 2026, the masterclasses offered a limited number of places, with Yoko joining the class of renowned cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.

Alongside the masterclasses, Yoko attended concerts, talks and a session with Thomas Zwieg from Larsen Strings, as well as meeting fellow young cellists from around the world.

A wonderful opportunity to learn, listen and perform in the inspiring atmosphere of Kronberg. Yoko studies at Purcell with Pal Banda.

Purcell Percussionist Invited to Return to Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra

Following her participation in the 2026 Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra, we are delighted to share that Hannah (Year 13, percussion) has been invited to join the 2027 VFJO.

The invitation recognises Hannah’s contribution during this year’s festival and means she will have the opportunity to return to the prestigious international programme next summer.

Congratulations to Hannah on this wonderful achievement. She studies percussion at Purcell with Ryan Hepburn.

Purcell Student Wins National Windsurfing Championship

Congratulations to Ted (Year 8), who has been crowned 2026 UKWA National Windsurfing Champion, winning gold in the Techno293 6.8m fleet at the National Wind Sports Championships at Rutland.

Ted also helped his club, the Foremark Flyers, secure the League Champions Cup – their first victory in the competition. This marks his second consecutive year as a National Champion, having won the 5.0m fleet in 2025.

Ted’s achievements are particularly impressive given that he only took up windsurfing in 2024. He has already represented Great Britain at European and World Techno293 Championships and has now been selected for the RYA Talent Transition Pathway for iQFOiL, the Olympic sailing discipline.

We wish Ted every success as he continues his training and competition career. He studies bassoon and saxophone at Purcell.

Introducing the 2026–27 Student Leadership Team

Following a process of elections and interviews, we are delighted to announce The Purcell School’s Student Leadership Team for 2026–27. All members of the new team are in Year 13 and will play an important role in representing their fellow students and contributing to life across the School.

This year’s team is as follows:

  • Heads of School: Emily, Julianna, Selin and Ayman
  • Academic Leads: Hannah and Grace
  • Activities Leads: Reeka and Rebecca
  • Charities and Outreach Leads: April and Daria
  • Sustainability Lead: Skye
  • Music Leads: Lilly and Clara

In recognition of the high calibre of candidates, Principal Paul Bambrough has made the decision to appoint four Heads of School rather than the usual three. He explained: “I have made the exceptional decision to appoint four (rather than three) people to the position of Head of School. This reflects the outstanding performance of these four candidates at the interview.”

Congratulations to all those appointed to the team. We look forward to seeing the contribution they make to the Purcell community over the coming academic year, and extend our sincere thanks to everyone who put themselves forward for a leadership role.

Photos of the full Student Leadership Team will be shared in next week’s Weekly Highlights.

A Fantastic Afternoon at Purcell’s Brass Experience

Following our Open Morning on Sunday 4 October, we were delighted to welcome 25 young brass players to the School for the first Purcell Brass Experience of the academic year.

Now in its second year, the initiative gives young brass musicians the opportunity to work with Purcell’s outstanding brass faculty, led by Head of Wind, Brass & Percussion Mike Cavanagh. The afternoon included full ensemble and sectional rehearsals, with repertoire ranging from Strauss’s Tritsch-Tratsch Polka and Tallis’s If Ye Love Me to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Our own Brass Trio – Mason (Year 12), Trevor (Year 13) and Skye (Year 13) – also performed the first movement of Poulenc’s Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone, adding a special showcase from current Purcell musicians to the afternoon.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, and our thanks to Tony Cross (trumpet) and Ruth Molins (trombone) for their expert tuition.

The next Purcell Brass Experience will take place on Sunday 31 January 2027. Registration is open here.

Introducing the Art Department’s Golden Frame Award

The Purcell School’s Art Department has launched a new monthly initiative celebrating outstanding student artwork: the Golden Frame Award.

Each month, one piece of work from across the School will be selected to receive a certificate and small prize, with the winning artwork displayed in a golden frame in the main School building.

The inaugural September award has gone to Jonah (Year 11) for his painting, which the Art Department selected as an exciting and distinctive outcome of his exploration of the theme Buildings for his GCSE coursework.

Congratulations to Jonah. We look forward to seeing more work celebrated through the Golden Frame Award throughout the year!

Alumni News: Julia Majewska Performs in BBC Young Musician 2026 Live Auditions

We were delighted to see Julia Majewska (violin, Class of 2026) take to the stage for the live auditions of BBC Young Musician 2026, broadcast on Sunday 4 October.

Now in its 25th edition, the prestigious competition showcases exceptional young instrumentalists from across the UK. Presented by Petroc Trelawny, this year’s live auditions featured a distinguished judging panel comprising concert pianist Joanna MacGregor, conductor Ben Gernon and guest judge Peter Moore, acclaimed trombonist.

Julia performed two contrasting works: the first movement of Debussy’s Violin Sonata and Szymanowski’s Tarantella, accompanied by fellow Purcell alumna Phoebe Papandrea (Class of 2025) on piano. Julia’s performance received considerable praise and we are delighted to see her musical talent recognised on this national platform.

You can watch Julia’s performance on BBC iPlayer, from 13:41 to 18:48: Watch BBC Young Musician 2026 – Live Auditions, Part 1.

Julia studied at Purcell with Charles Sewart, and the whole School community is wishing her every success as she progresses through the competition.

Alumni News: Alim Beisembayev Named Among The Telegraph’s Most Exciting Young Musicians

Purcell alumnus and pianist Alim Beisembayev has been named by The Telegraph as one of the 10 most exciting young musicians in the world.

Writing for The Telegraph, classical music critic Ivan Hewett singled out Alim’s remarkable musical journey and the extraordinary talent that has seen him emerge as one of the most exciting pianists of his generation.

Born in Kazakhstan, Alim came to The Purcell School in 2010, where he studied piano with Tessa Nicholson. During his time at Purcell, he won a number of major prizes, including First Prize at the inaugural Junior Cliburn International Piano Competition in the USA.

His international career has continued to gather momentum. In 2021, Alim won First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, as well as its medici.tv Audience Prize and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society Award. Two years later, he made a sensational BBC Proms debut after stepping in at just two days’ notice to perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Sinfonia of London and John Wilson.

Huge congratulations to Alim on this wonderful recognition.
