Purcell Violinist Reaches BBC Young Musician Grand Final

We are thrilled to announce that Year 12 violinist Shlomi has made it through to the final three contestants of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2024 competition!

Shlomi, along with fellow finalists Ryan Wang (piano, 17) from Canada and Jacky Zhang (piano, 16) from Surrey, earned their places in the final after advancing through a highly competitive semi-final round. The announcement was made on Sunday 13th October, during the BBC Four and iPlayer broadcast – available here. (Shlomi 54:03)

The Grand Final was recorded at the Bristol Beacon on 24th September, and highlights will air on BBC Two and iPlayer on Sunday 20th October, with the full event being broadcast on BBC Four, BBC iPlayer, Radio 3 and BBC Sounds. The finalists will perform concertos accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Ben Gernon.

Shlomi‘s performance and dedication have brought him to this incredible milestone, and all at Purcell wish him the very best of luck in the final!

Purcell Student Wins Revelation Award

We are delighted to announce that Year 10 pop and commercial singer Lia has won the Revelation Award at her hometown’s Radio Annual Awards (Gala da Rádio Vizela). This fantastic achievement highlights Lia’s growing talent and success in the music industry. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and look forward to seeing her continue to shine!

Purcell Students Triumph at Elland Silver Band Slow Melody Competition

On 5th October, the Elland Silver Band in West Yorkshire revived their Slow Melody competition for the first time since 2019. This event challenges brass players to perform slow, lyrical solos, emphasising the importance of expressive playing, which is often overshadowed by fast, technical pieces.

Purcell students Skye (Y11, baritone horn/trombone) and Glyn (Y7, trumpet) both claimed first prizes in their respective age categories—16 & Under and 11 & Under. Skye was especially delighted to see her name join the past winners’ list on the trophy, which includes none other than Purcell’s own Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion, Mike Cavanagh!

Skye and Glyn also teamed up with Rhys (Y12, trumpet) and Nick (their dad, bass trombone) to compete in the Open Quartets category. The group performed excerpts from Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14, Death and the Maiden, arranged for brass quartet by Rhys and Nick. Competing in an experienced field, they achieved a commendable 4th place, with Nick notably being the fifth youngest competitor in the entire section!

Congratulations to the entire ensemble on their impressive achievements!

Purcell Bassist Attends Double Bass Course in Hamburg

Last weekend, Year 9 student Lucas, who studies double bass with Cathy Elliott at Purcell, travelled to Hamburg to participate in a double bass course hosted by the Hamburg Conservatoire. The course, held on 13th October, offered Lucas a unique opportunity to perform in an orchestra of around 30 double bassists, play in a double bass chamber group, and attend a specialised physiotherapy session aimed at helping double bass players maintain their health and improve coordination.

Lucas also received invaluable one-on-one tuition from Felix von Werder, double bassist at the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and Stefan Schäfer, principal double bassist and composer in residence at the Hamburg Conservatoire. Lucas is currently studying a piece composed by Schäfer, making it a special experience to play it for the composer and receive direct feedback.

Lucas thoroughly enjoyed the course, the warm welcome from fellow bassists of all ages, and the chance to further his musical development in such a supportive environment.

Concerts Review

Last weekend, seventeen Purcell students made the journey to Hatfield House to perform as part of their thirteenth Music Festival. The Hatfield House Music Festival is a long weekend of concerts, curated by Artistic Director Guy Johnston, which takes place annually in September/October at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

Over the past 12 years the Festival has welcomed performers such as the Navarra Quartet, pianists Tom Poster, Kathryn Stott and Melvyn Tan, Nicholas Daniel (oboe), Alison Balsom (trumpet), Sheku Kanneh-Mason (cello), Lucy Crowe (soprano), Rachel Podger (baroque violin), James Gilchrist (tenor), The Sixteen, the Aurora Orchestra and VOCES8, all to play in the beautiful surroundings of Hatfield House.

On Saturday 12th, students performed a concert in the Marble Hall, with a programme including Mozart’s String Quartet in Bb KV 458 ‘The Hunt’, and Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D Op. 70 No 1 ‘Ghost’. The group were also lucky to play this work to visiting cellist and alumnus Robert Cohen last Wednesday.

On Sunday 13th, writer, composer and broadcaster Stephen Johnson and Paul Hoskins explored the moonstruck musical world of Pierrot Lunaire with singer Claire Booth and The Purcell School students. This was the second time The Purcell School Chamber Soloists have performed this work after their Wigmore Hall concert in September.

Lunchtime Concerts
We had a special to start the week’s concerts with vocalists Sonya and Mac, well done for your performances. We have also been treated to violin, piano and a self composed piece on the celeste by Gerard. It was also very pleasing to see the double reed department flourishing with oboe and bassoon performances this week. Well done to Rebecca, Saule, Natalie, Kuan-Lin, Chaeyu, Zhuldyz, Yacub, Lilly and Ostap.

Rafael Gutiérrez Vélez Piano Recital, Wednesday 16th October
The school was very pleased to welcome alumnus Rafael Gutiérrez Vélez to perform an evening recital of piano music in the CP Hall. Rafael is now an accomplished pianist with extensive performance experience both in Europe and internationally.

The performance began with the gentle Paisajes by Mompou, followed by Beethoven Piano Sonata No.24, Scriabin Sonata Nos 7 and 4 and finally Chopin Sonata No.2.

The evening was much enjoyed by all.

Judy Carmichael and Sam Dunn Masterclass and Concert, Tuesday 15th October
On Tuesday evening, stride pianist Judy Carmichael visited the school to deliver a masterclass to our jazz, pop and commercial students alongside Purcell’s jazz guitar teacher Sam Dunn. The workshop included a mixture of Judy and Sam performing together, and with students in rehearsal for a joint concert that evening. Congratulations to all those who took part – it was a wonderful opportunity to play alongside such a high profile artist.
