Purcell Composer Premieres New Jazz Work in Greenwich
We’re delighted to share that Natty (Year 13, composer) has premiered a brand new work this week.
Natty’s piece, Dreams That Land On Wheeler – inspired by the late jazz composer Kenny Wheeler – was written especially for his brother Luke Purbrick’s jazz octet. The work received its first performance on Wednesday 2nd July at the beautiful Chapel of St Peter & St Paul in Greenwich, with Natty himself conducting.
Congratulations to Natty on this exciting premiere and for bringing his music to life in such a special setting!
Year 13 Lecture-Recitals
On Friday 20th June, Year 13 students Tom, Suanoi and Aaron each gave lecture-recitals that represented the culmination of the work that they have been doing throughout the year as part of the new Advanced Analysis seminar with Mr Shiner. Over several months, they were required to develop a research project and accompanying thesis, write and propose an abstract, before ultimately crafting and giving their lectures, which were required to incorporate an element of performance to illustrate their work. They then took questions from staff and students. They took on topics as varied as motivic development in late-Romantic period music, the politics of musical-cultural appropriation in contemporary classical music, and an exploration of Fluxus performance art. All three created highly enjoyable, insightful, and thought-provoking presentations.
Dr. Simon Frisch Visit
On Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th June, Purcell welcomed Dr. Simon Frisch, musicologist and composer from Stanford University, California, for seminars, talks and individual sessions with students. On Tuesday evening, he held two seminars for Composition students, where he discussed his own music and scores, as well as how his research interests of medieval and Renaissance music inform his work. On Wednesday morning, he gave a talk to year 12 and 13 students (pictured) during which he talked about his life and career to date, as well as answering questions from both Mr Shiner and students about the realities of living and working as a portfolio musician. For the rest of the day, in addition to visiting the Year 13 Advanced Analysis seminar, where he introduced students to the analysis of Renaissance polyphonic music, he also gave selected students individual feedback on compositions, essays, and answering questions about life in the profession as well as international study. This was a wonderful opportunity for so many at Purcell to benefit from his knowledge and expertise, and he was blown away by the standard of work and enthusiasm shown by our students!

The first half was all about our Brass Ensemble, an ensemble curated at the beginning of the academic year by Head of WBP, Mike Cavanagh. Our Brass Ensemble performed a mix of music, including John Iveson’s arrangement of Susato Suite (written for and made famous by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble), Elgar’s Chanson de Matin, Gade’s Jealousy and Stuart Malcom’s arrangement of Malaguena. It was also a chance to feature three of our trumpeters, Mason, Rhys and Joshua, to perform Leroy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday. In the second half our Symphonic Wind Orchestra took to the stage and delivered spectacularly on some very demanding repertoire: Masque (Hesketh), Manx Dances (Ellerby), Vesuvius (Ticheli), finishing with Folk Song Suite (Vaughan-Williams). The whole evening was conducted by HoD, Mike Cavanagh, who wants to say a huge congratulations to all WBP students involved on a terrific evening!

Dido and Aeneas – Thursday 3rd July
Dido and Aeneas was Purcell’s first staged opera for several years and singers and players alike rose to the, in some cases, very new challenge outstandingly. Jessie and Suanoi starred as a melodramatic Dido and naive Aeneas respectively. Both were dramatically and vocally compelling; their final duet was particularly emotionally real and enthralling. Boris was a fabulously scheming Sorceress, who showed a real ability to command an audience and deliver a recitative with menace, ably supported by the comedy duo of Tristan and Mattias, whose vocal fireworks impressed. Adi (Belinda) led Dido and Aeneas’ slick and dramatically convincing entourage (Sonya, Mac, Katrina) with a bustling no nonscience approach. Two younger singers, Sonya and Kiah, showed that they are very much vocal and dramatic talents to watch for future shows.
The singers were supported by sensitive continuo playing from Asher, Thomasine, Yifei and the orchestra managed the complication of accompanying singers and dramatic action outstandingly, also providing tight and expressive preludes and orchestral dances. The chorus not only sounded excellent, but brought an additional element to the show interacting with the onstage action with enthusiasm.
Lunchtime Concerts
The week began with Yulin and Stephanie performing works by Phil Woods and Beethoven. Maria, Lily and Siyue performed George Enescu and Astor Piazzolla on Tuesday. Marcus, Otto, Natty, Lucas and Sam performed together on Wednesday as part of our ‘Jazz Day’ and on Thursday we were treated to a french horn concert including our horn players Brad, Trevor, John, Theo and Jarvis working with Mike Thompson and the Royal Academy of Music french horns.
