Weekly Highlights 6th June 2025

Purcell Pianist Makes History in The Piano Final

We are thrilled to share that Year 8 jazz pianist Marcus delivered a standout performance in the final of Channel 4’s The Piano, which aired on Sunday 25th May. In a series first, Marcus was paired with fellow contestant Phil for a surprise duet, marking the inaugural duo performance in the show’s finale. Their collaboration showcased the profound connectivity inherent in jazz music, captivating both the judges and the audience.

Marcus’s soulful jazz interpretations and original compositions were a highlight of the evening. Notably, he performed his piece Blue Haze, inspired by Australia’s Blue Mountains, demonstrating his exceptional creativity and compositional skills.

The final episode is available to stream on Channel 4’s platform here.

Congratulations to Marcus on this outstanding achievement. We are immensely proud.

Purcell Student to perform at Glastonbury and Reaches Songwriting Finals

We are thrilled to share exciting news about Oscar, a Year 13 singer-songwriter. Oscar has been invited to perform at none other than Glastonbury Festival 2025! He will take to the Lizard Stage on Thursday 26th June at 3pm and showcase his music to a live festival audience.

In addition to this milestone, Oscar has also reached the top 30 finalists of the Song Academy Young Songwriter 2025 Competition. His track End of the Summer, co-written with Purcell alumnus Nathaniel Merkes, earned him a spot in this prestigious national competition.

Congratulations to Oscar on these brilliant achievements.

Not One but Two Students Celebrated in Songwriting Finals!

Oscar is not the only Purcell student to be recognised in this year’s Song Academy Young Songwriter Competition – we are equally delighted to announce that Willow (Year 10) has also been named one of the top 30 finalists in the 2025 edition.

Her original track, Hesitate, which was performed in School this week at a lunchtime concert (to huge applause!) was selected from hundreds of entries across the UK, showcasing her unique voice and songwriting talent.

Congratulations to both Oscar and Willow on their well-deserved recognition – we’re incredibly proud of you both!

Purcell Student Performs at Chesham Fringe Festival

Hot on the heels of a week filled with GCSE exams, Clara (Year 11) demonstrated true dedication and artistry by performing two solo 45-minute sets in one day – featuring mostly her own original songs.

Her main performance was part of Chesham’s 2nd Fringe Festival, held over the May Bank Holiday weekend, which featured a vibrant line-up of artists from the worlds of music, comedy and spoken word. Clara’s set was a standout moment, showcasing her songwriting talent and stage presence.

Adding to the occasion, several Purcell staff members – local to the area – were in the audience to cheer her on, making it a particularly special event.

Congratulations to Clara on managing exams and performances with such professionalism and flair!

Year 13 Composer Selected for Composition Masterclass in Budapest

We are delighted to share that Adi (Year 13) has been selected to take part in the highly regarded She Lives Master Class in Composition, to be held from 23rd to 26th July 2025 at the Budapest Music Center (BMC).

Organised by She Lives Music, a European association dedicated to contemporary music, the masterclass focuses on composition for string instruments, with a particular emphasis on string quartets. It brings together a select group of emerging composers for an intensive programme led by acclaimed composers Sidney Corbett and Alessio Elia. The resident ensemble for this edition is the internationally renowned Roman Quartet.

Adi will have the second movement of her composition For What We Give – entitled ‘Distortion’ – performed by the Roman Quartet during the final concert on 26th July at the BMC.

Adding a personal and inspiring connection, one of the lead tutors, Sidney Corbett, was a student of György Ligeti, a composer who Adi very much admires and is inspired by.

Congratulations to Adi on this exceptional opportunity!

Purcell Students to Perform at the Lichfield Festival

We are thrilled to announce that two of our young pianists, Stephanie (Year 10) and Yazdi (Year 13), will be performing at the 2025 Lichfield Festival on Saturday 12th July, 12pm, as part of The Purcell School – Young Artists Series.

Their programme will include:

Maurice Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit: Ondine
J.S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in A Major, BWV 888
Frédéric Chopin: Fantasie in F minor, Op. 49

The performance is dedicated to the memory of Caroline Green and tickets are available now from the Lichfield Festival website.

Inspiring Vocal Masterclass with Louise Crane

Just before the recent half-term break, our singers had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a masterclass with Louise Crane from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. With a warm yet authoritative presence, Louise brought out the very best in each participant – from the youngest singers to those in Year 13.

Kiah, Sonya, Solomiya, Mac, Arabella and Suanoi all performed beautifully, and were, as always, supportively accompanied by Daniel Swain.

We are very grateful to Louise for sharing her expertise and inspiration and we look forward to welcoming her back to Purcell in the future.

Dr Fardon Featured on New LSO Album Release

We are delighted to share that Dr Daniel Fardon, Teacher of Academic Music and Composition here at Purcell, is featured on the newly released London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) album, Panufnik Legacies IV. His composition, Flux, appears alongside works by some of the most exciting early-career composers in contemporary classical music today.

The album is part of the LSO’s Panufnik Legacies series, which showcases music developed through the Helen Hamlyn Panufnik Composers’ Scheme – an initiative supporting emerging composers through collaboration with the LSO.

Panufnik Legacies IV was released today, 6th June 2025, and is available to stream and purchase. Order the album here.

Congratulations to Dr Fardon on this exceptional achievement!

Concerts Review

McMillan Cancer Support Recital
On Tuesday 3rd June, Asher, Teodora and Stephanie travelled to Stanborough Park Church Centre in Watford to perform for a group of patients supported by Macmillan Cancer Support. The audience, gathered over tea and cakes, listened attentively to a programme of piano solos ranging from Bach to Ravel. Mr Fong‘s engaging introductions, highlighting the unique features of each piece, added a special touch to the afternoon.

Lunchtime Concerts

A mellow and perfect start to the week on Monday from Cole, Fabienne, Natty, Lucas and Sam performing Abba and jazz numbers. On Tuesday Lucas and Yixuan played 19th century works by Fauré and Schubert complimented by Siyue performing Prokofiev’s Concertino 1st movement, interestingly this piece was left incomplete at the composer’s death in 1953, then completed by Mstislav Rostropovich and Dmitry Kabalevsky. Well done to Willow who programmed Wednesday’s concert in the JCS, a great balance of self composed songs and one cover, supported by Clara, Seth, Gabriel, William, Arlan, Ruby and Mahla. It was very refreshing to hear a baritone horn for the first time in a lunchtime concert on Thursday alongside solo violin and piano pieces, well done to Skye, Chaeyu and Daria for these.

New Sailing Sounds – Competition for Young Composers

We are thrilled to partner with the Met Office for New Sailing Sounds, a national competition celebrating 100 years of the Shipping Forecast.

Young musicians are invited to reimagine ‘Sailing By’ by Ronald Binge using flute, clarinet, violin or cello. Two winning pieces (one primary, one secondary) will be performed at a special event in Central London, July 2025.

The deadline for applications is 8th June 2025. Further details are available here and below.
