Jane Mitchell started her career as a French, German and PE teacher at St Christopher School in Letchworth and has a wealth of pastoral expertise having worked in boarding education both in the UK, Dubai and Germany. Whilst at Christ’s Hospital she took a month’s sabbatical to teach in a remote school in the Andes before returning and introducing Spanish to the MFL curriculum.
During her teaching career Jane has spent many summers volunteering including working with street children in Nepal, teaching French to refugees in the Calais Refugee Camp through Care 4 Calais and working with disabled Sahrawi child refugees in Italy. She has worked as a teacher consultant for the charity Young Minds and is also a qualified Life Coach and Coach within Education.
Jane ran 2 highly successful boarding houses at Repton School in Derbyshire and Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire for a total of 12 years. She was then promoted to create and take on the role of Director of Wellbeing at Lord Wandsworth College whilst also remodelling the PSHE department, which included introducing PSHE to the 6th Form curriculum. Throughout her career she has also coached tennis and squash, taught yoga and mindfulness and led multiple trips abroad including exchanges, sporting and ski trips in Europe and as far afield as Ghana. She has a strong belief in the power of community compassion and established changemaker student groups working with Amnesty International UK, UK Feminista and Just Like Us allowing students to understand the importance of creating environments where all students feel safe, valued, loved and respected.
Jane enjoys discovering the wonders of nature and has travelled extensively throughout the world, often backpacking or housesitting in order to have a more authentic experience of local culture and to discover less travelled areas. The highlight of her travels is perhaps dancing with her family and local villagers around the campfire in an isolated village high up in the Kingdom of Lesotho.
