Woodwind

The Wind Department at The Purcell School is compact but richly diverse. With a range of amazing teachers, drawn from the UK’s finest woodwind players, we nurture young musicians to become versatile and expressive woodwind performers.

We offer specialised instruction in flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, classical saxophone and recorder, with chamber music at the heart of the department. Students play a key role in the School’s orchestras and baroque ensembles, as well as regularly performing in family groupings, contemporary ensembles and in collaboration with other departments on new projects. This diverse range of performance opportunities allows students to gain experience as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral players.

Enriched by regular and exciting masterclasses from renowned woodwind players, students are also offered invaluable opportunities to learn from and be inspired by leading figures in the field. These masterclasses provide a platform for students to explore a wide range of repertoire and develop their ensemble skills.

Purcell Giving Day

11–12 December 2025, 10am – 10am

The final note has sounded, and our first Giving Day has officially come to a close.

We are thrilled to share that together we have raised £40,435 for the Bursary Fund.

To everyone who tuned in, donated, encouraged our performers or helped spread the word — thank you. You have made a genuine difference to the lives of young musicians.

If you would still like to contribute, the Giving Day site remains open here.
