Entry Requirements

At The Purcell School, we are looking for exceptionally talented young musicians who demonstrate outstanding potential, commitment, and musicality. Our entry requirements ensure that all students are well-prepared to benefit from the School’s specialist music and academic programmes.

Please see How to Apply for information about the application process. For further information, please email admissions@purcell-school.org or call 01923 331 100.

Age of entry

The Purcell School welcomes applications from young musicians between the ages of 11 and 18.

Please note that we do not accept entry into academic Year Group 11 or 13 because these are exam years (GCSEs / A Levels).

The school may accept ‘out of year’ admissions, subject to a decision by the Principal.

Musical requirements

We consider musical ability and promise to be more significant than grade attainment – we are looking for evidence of musical skillmotivationcommitment and potential.

There are no rigid entry criteria – each student’s musical journey is unique and we value individual progress. Above all else we are looking for evidence of some achievement, a musical spark, and lots of potential. Our happiest students are the ones who are extremely motivated intrinsically: they can’t imagine doing anything other than music, and this is clear in their playing and singing.

Students are not required to play a second instrument for entry to the school, although many of our students do.

As a general guide, most students joining The Purcell School will be performing at approximately the minimum standards outlined below on their first instrument.

Pianists

  • Age 11: Grade 6-8+
  • Age 12-15: Grade 8-Diploma+

Violinists and cellists

  • Age 11: Grade 5-7+
  • Age 12-15: Grade 7+

Wind, brass, harp, viola, double bass and percussion

These players often begin their instruments at an older age, and may be offered a place on potential if they have a less advanced playing level.

Composition, Jazz, Audio Production, Commercial and Popular Music

Students are advised to contact the school for more information if in doubt.

We teach advanced students of classical music, jazz and commercial and popular music. Although the musical repertoire is varied, we do not currently run a formal pop or rock course.

All students study GCSE and A Level Music. Many sixth form students also take Music Technology at the School.

Vocal students

Vocal applicants in Years 7 – 9 should play another instrument to a high standard. We are very much a music school that helps to develop students’ musicality in a rounded way, including singing, songwriting, arranging, theory and aural skills – to develop a wide variety of skills in students.

Please note that because we are not affiliated with a cathedral, we are not equipped to offer a lot of choral opportunities.

Standard of play for entry to Sixth Form (Year 12)

We are looking for students who will comfortably be ready to apply for top conservatoires and universities at the start of Year 13.

Academic requirements

There are no academic entry requirements, except in the case of Sixth Form applications, where students should normally have five or more GCSE or IGCSE passes at grade 4 or above (or international equivalent).

Students follow a fully rounded curriculum alongside their musical studies at The Purcell School.

A school reference is required as part of the admissions process.

Audition

Entry to the School is via audition. Applications are passed to the relevant Head of Department and applicants may be invited to attend an audition.

Please see Auditions for further information.
