Weekly Highlights 23rd May 2025

Alex Redington Appointed New Head of Strings

On Thursday 22nd May, we were thrilled to announce the appointment of Alex Redington, acclaimed violinist and educator, as our new Head of Strings, beginning September 2025.

A Purcell alumnus, Alex brings exceptional experience both as a performer and teacher. He is a founding member and first violinist of the renowned Doric String Quartet, which he co-founded at the age of 15. Over 27 years, the ensemble built a distinguished international reputation and an acclaimed discography with Chandos Records. Their final Beethoven recordings were praised by Gramophone Magazine for Redington’s “mesmerising playing.”

In addition to his performing career, Alex is a dedicated educator, having taught at the Royal Academy of Music, Yehudi Menuhin School and the University of Cambridge. His collaborations include artists such as Benjamin Grosvenor, Jonathan Biss, Elisabeth Leonskaja and Marc-André Hamelin, with performances at Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Wigmore Hall. As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras including the Vienna Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestra, under conductors such as John Adams and Edward Gardner.

Alex succeeds Charles Sewart, who will step down after 18 years of outstanding leadership. The School extends its heartfelt thanks to Charles for his immense contribution to generations of young string players.

Reflecting on his appointment, Alex said: “I am thrilled to take up the position of Head of Strings at The Purcell School. Having been a student there myself, I am fully aware of the importance and positive impact it has on shaping the futures of its gifted students. I feel privileged to be entrusted with this role and look forward to working alongside the School’s talented staff to help realise the enormous potential of its students.”

Principal Paul Bambrough commented: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Alex back to The Purcell School. His exceptional musicianship, inspiring career and deep commitment to education make him uniquely suited to lead our Strings Department into its next chapter. We look forward with great excitement to all he will bring to our musical community.”

Purcell and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain

During the Easter holidays, Skye (Y11, baritone horn) spent a week at Pangbourne College, Berkshire, on the 2025 Easter course of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB). This was an intensive week of individual, sectional and full band rehearsals working with by world class tutors – including Purcell Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion Mike Cavanagh.

Led by Lieutenant Colonel David Barringer MVO MBE, Commanding Officer of the Bands of the Household Division, the course culminated with two sold out concerts; the first at Tidworth Garrison Theatre, Wiltshire, and the second at Halifax Minster, Yorkshire. The Tidworth concert also featured the course’s guest soloist, trombonist and Purcell alumna Isobel Daws.

The theme of the concert was Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, featuring music from previous members and conductors of the NYBBGB, and the programme was as follows:

Fest Musik der Stadt Wien – Richard Strauss arr. Howard Lorriman

Purcell Student Named Best Composer at North London Music Festival

We are delighted to announce that Stephanie (Year 7, harpist) has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Composer 2025 at the North London Music Festival, presented at the End-of-Festival Concert on 20th May.

Stephanie received this honour for her original composition, It Is Not Always May, a moving and imaginative work for harp and voice inspired by the poem of the same name by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

We are doubly pleased for Stephanie as this piece has already earned 1st Prize in the Festival’s Junior Composition Competition. Enormously well done!

Year 8 Bring Characters to Life in Drama

This week in Drama, Year 8 students unleashed their creativity in a lively costume-based exercise. With an array of wigs, hats and costumes at their disposal, they were challenged to create distinct characters and bring them together in improvised scenes – resulting in plenty of laughter and imaginative storytelling!

A big thank you to Mr Szafranski for capturing the fun in the following photo!

New CD and Launch Concert for Sarah-Jane Bradley

We’re delighted to share that Sarah-Jane Bradley, one of our viola teachers, has recently released a new CD with her chamber group Karolos. The album, available on First Hand Records, features Mozart’s Divertimento in E-flat, K.563 alongside two new works by composers Robert Fokkens (Dawn Chants on the Umfolozi, Limping Dance) and Julian Joseph (Bring it!).

The recording has already received recognition, with BBC Radio 3’s Record Review praising Dawn Chants in a recent broadcast. You can listen to the album on Spotify.

To celebrate the release, Karolos – comprising Harriet Mackenzie (violin), Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola), and Graham Walker (cello) – will perform a CD launch concert on Saturday 24th May at 7.30pm, hosted at World Heart Beat, Embassy Gardens, London SW11 7BD. The programme includes works by Schubert, Fokkens, Joseph and Mozart, with both featured composers attending.

Student tickets are available at a special price of £5, and all proceeds support the young musicians at World Heart Beat Music Academy.

More details and tickets are available here.

Morta Grigaliunaite Releases Landmark New Album

We’re thrilled to share that Morta Grigaliunaite, pianist and instrumental teacher here at Purcell, has recently released a landmark recording: Rautavaara: Complete Piano Works. The album, released on Piano Classics, is the first-ever complete recording of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s solo piano repertoire.

The recording has already received high praise from BBC Radio 3’s Record Review, where it was described as: “Such a treat.” and “It was a huge task and she took it on in an incredible way . . . The performance is assured and muscular but also light and mystical where it’s appropriate. She really dug into the heart of his music and has brought out something that maybe we haven’t seen before.”

The album showcases Morta’s artistry and commitment to bringing lesser-known repertoire to new audiences. You can hear the full review and discussion here on BBC Sounds (beginning around the 12-minute mark).

Congratulations to Morta on this exceptional achievement!

Irina Walter Presents Advanced Aural Training at International Conducting Academy

We are pleased to share that Irina Walters, our Aural and Choral Conducting teacher, recently delivered the final session in a three-part series for the International Conducting Academy’s course on Beethoven. Her session focused on advanced aural training for orchestral conductors from around the world.

The workshop centred on harmonic analysis of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, prompting lively discussion and insightful questions from participants. Irina designed a series of innovative teaching aids that were particularly well received. These included tools to explain the structure of intervals in harmonic minor and major scales with a minor subdominant, as well as clear differentiation between the three types of Augmented 6th chords.

The session also featured analysis of a complex chord progression involving multiple transient modulations, providing a rich and challenging learning experience for attendees.

Participants expressed strong appreciation for Irina’s approach and for the crucial role that aural training and analysis play in the development of musicianship – especially for conductors.

Waves Issue 3 Published!

We are excited to share that the third issue of Waves, Purcell’s creative magazine, was published on Wednesday 21st May. Edited by Dr Daniel Fardon, this latest edition is a vibrant celebration of the imagination and interdisciplinary spirit that defines our school community.

Featuring contributions from both students and staff, the magazine spans an extraordinary range of topics – from mathematical art and musical analysis to fantastical fiction, visual art and experimental performance. It’s a rich showcase of the talent and curiosity that thrive at Purcell.

Reflecting on the issue, Dr Fardon writes: “Editing this issue has been a great privilege; every submission reminds us what a special place of imagination our community is.”

The full issue is available to read here.

Congratulations to all who contributed!

Concerts Review

Friday 16th May – Chiltern Arts Festival at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church, Great Missenden
It was a busy and rewarding week for our Year 12 string players, who performed alongside acclaimed violinist Lucy Russell in Great Missenden on Day 8 of the Chiltern Arts Festival. This concert marked the conclusion of a mini-tour that earlier in the week had taken them to Benslow Music Trust and The Old Palace Hatfield House.

A particularly special aspect of the Great Missenden concert was the inclusion of readings by novelist Harriet Constable from her book The Instrumentalist. These readings beautifully linked the movements of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and a new work by composer Deborah Pritchard, inspired by Harriet’s writing and workshopped with students from Great Missenden Church of England Combined School. The programme also featured Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata, mesmerisingly performed by Lucy Russell.

Congratulations to all our Year 12 performers, and special recognition to the Vivaldi soloists Sonya, Isaac, Sofiia, Theo and Maddie. Additional congratulations to Sofiia, Fabienne and Teresa for their standout performances in Corelli’s Christmas Concerto.
