Weekly Highlights 24th January 2025

Purcell Violinist wins Norfolk Young Musician 2025

We are thrilled to share that Year 12 violinist, Tristan, has been awarded the title of Norfolk Young Musician 2025.

The annual competition, organised by the Michael Badminton Musicians Trust, took place earlier this month and saw 15 talented young musicians from across Norfolk showcase their skills. Renowned cellist Joely Koos adjudicated the competition and commended all of the participants on their ‘impressive performances’.

Our congratulations to Tristan! Hugely well done.

Wind, Brass & Percussion Taster Day with LYCB

On Sunday 19th January, our Head of Wind, Brass & Percussion, Mr Cavanagh, organised a WBP Taster Day where we were delighted to welcome the London Youth Concert Band (LYCB) and other local young musicians to work side-by-side with our Symphonic Wind Orchestra. The day began with a massed rehearsal on Bernstein’s Overture to ‘Candide’ and Marquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo, followed by sectional rehearsals led by the expert instrumental tutors here at Purcell. There was then time for a Q&A with Mr Cavanagh, Purcell’s Principal Mr Bambrough and Year 13 flautist Suanoi, before ending the day with a closing concert which featured over 90 young musicians performing in front of a packed CP Hall!

Year 11 Art Students Find Inspiration at the Tate Modern

On Tuesday 14th January, our Year 11 GCSE Art students swapped their classrooms for the creative halls of the Tate Modern in London. This exciting trip was organised by Head of Art, Mrs Samuel, as an enriching opportunity to inspire students in preparation for their exam components.

Describing the day as a chance ‘to nourish their exam component, looking through the lens of their starting point, Mrs Samuel encouraged the students to immerse themselves in the diverse collection of contemporary and modern art on display.

As the students sketched, photographed and reflected on their favourite pieces, the trip offered a creative spark that promised to shape their own artistic journeys in the months to come.
