Wellbeing for Young Musicians

Picture

Year 7 pupil, Eliza, illustrating various points dressed as a double bass…

This week’s whole school assembly caused a bit of a buzz. Presented by The Purcell School’s Physiotherapist, Sarah Upjohn and accompanied by the inimitable Dr Muso-Hathway and his walking bass…. the focus was on avoiding playing related Injury.  With Dr Muso resplendent in helicopter hat and bow tie providing some wonderful slapstick moments, (and a particularly long face when growth spurt related problems were highlighted), Sarah Upjohn alerted all pupils to the potential risks associated with:

· Sudden increase in playing time
· Introduction of new technical demands
· Posture when playing
· Stress
· Growth Spurt

It was a highly entertaining assembly which carried a hugely important message for all of young musicians.
