On Tuesday, pupils and staff at The Purcell School had the privilege of hosting a visit by  Judith Weir CBE, Master of the Queen’s Music.

The famous composer attended a lunchtime concert, a Chamber Choir rehearsal, visited our Academic Music and Music Technology Departments and heard specially-composed pieces by Chelsea Becker, aged 11 and Lauren Marshall, aged 15.  She also gave an informal composition workshop, where students presented their work and ideas for discussion.

Weir is a British composer best known for her operas and theatrical works.  In 2005, she was appointed CBE for services to music and in 2014, was appointed as the Master of the Queen’s Music, succeeding Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.  In May 2015, Weir won The Ivors Classical Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards.
