Weekly Highlights 30th January 2026

Chris Brannick Masterclass

On Monday, some of Purcell’s percussionists enjoyed an extended hand drumming masterclass with polymath percussionist Chris Brannick, percussionist and founder member of Ensemble Bash, and Professor of Percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The focus to start with was Conga technique, whereby students explored different techniques for producing the various sounds common to Conga playing. This culminated in a massed Salsa groove, where members of the group demonstrated their newly-acquired techniques (some of them very impressively).

After that, two African dances followed, played on Djembes. The first, Kumpo, is a vibrant dance from Senegal, with a call played by the whole group followed by individual solos. The drumming in Kumpo is notable for its “cherry picking” action, where players throw their arms into the air, mid-phrase, as if to pluck cherries from a tree as one.

The group then studied Lenje, a Zambian dance with a more complex and extended rhythmic language, one characterised by cross patterns and complex off-beat riffs.

Much of this part of the session was built around learning how to build up African rhythmic language bit-by-bit, with the students copying Chris’s playing and memorising more parts of the musical language gradually. Once the whole language had been built up, the group stitched the whole dance together over a propulsive bass line on 2 low drums.

In between all this, Chris introduced the percussionists to a variety of games designed to build trust and energy among the group, as well as demonstrate how percussionists often have to straddle the line between musician and actor. These games therefore (and perhaps unsurprisingly) ranged from the problem solving type to the comic!

The group hugely enjoyed Chris’s quirky sense of humour and energy, and many of them made a point after the session to say how much they had enjoyed it. Thanks to all the percussionists for their involvement, and many thanks to Chris Brannick for his vibrant Monday afternoon session!

Running for the Purcell Bursary Fund

We are delighted to welcome back Panos Fellas, retired Purcell Physics teacher and long-standing Friend of Purcell, who is working with the School again for a short period. Alongside his return, Panos is taking on not one but two significant running challenges in support of the Purcell Students’ Bursary Fund.

Panos will be running the Watford Half Marathon on Sunday 1 February, followed by the Cyprus Marathon on 8 March. He is using these races to raise further funds for the Bursary Fund, building on the generosity shown during our recent 24-Hour Concert Giving Day. As Panos puts it, “I would love for those that know me (and those that don’t) to support my craziness by giving some money to the Purcell Students Bursary Fund!”.

If you would like to support Panos’s fundraising efforts, donations can be made via our Giving Day website here.

Lucy Phillips Awarded MA with Distinction

Warm congratulations to Lucy Phillips, Pop Music and Musical Theatre Voice teacher at Purcell, who has been awarded a Master’s Degree in the Professional Practice of the Arts (Vocal Pedagogy and Performance) with Distinction from Middlesex University.

We are delighted to celebrate this hugely well-deserved success. Congratulations, Lucy.

Thomas Kelly Reaches Final of International Franz Liszt Piano Competition

We are incredibly proud to share that pianist and Purcell alumnus Thomas Kelly reached the final of the 2026 International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht – one of the world’s most prestigious piano events and widely regarded among the top international competitions for young pianists.

The competition’s final round took place on 24 January 2026, when Thomas was one of three finalists to perform with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Grosze Zaal of TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.

Thomas was awarded second prize in this highly competitive field, with the first prize going to Alexander Kashpurin and with Kang Tae Kim taking third.

The competition has a distinguished history, with past winners including Purcell’s own Alexander Ullman (alumnus) and Vitaly Pisarenko, both of whom are members of the School’s Keyboard faculty. Thomas’s success places him firmly among an exceptional cohort of emerging international pianists.

You can watch Thomas‘s performance from the competition online here. (Thomas appears at approximately 9:18).

Please join us in congratulating Thomas on this extraordinary success – truly a standout moment for a Purcell alumnus on the world stage.

Concerts Review

Carpenters Park Care Home
On Tuesday 20 January, our middle school string quartet (Zarema, Nina, Lily and Siyue) gave an afternoon concert at Carpenters Park Care Home in Watford. Residents gathered to listen in the café, from their rooms and along the corridors, as warm string sounds filled the space. After the performance, the students spent time chatting with residents, who showed a keen interest in their musical journeys so far and their future aspirations. We hope to return to the care home soon for another lovely concert.
