Wind, Brass, Percussion, Voice, & Harp
The programme for these instruments is designed to develop musicians both as solo players and as flexible ensemble members, as this combination of qualities is essential to their future success.
In addition to mixed chamber music with the other departments, there are several family-group ensembles (for example: harp quartet, percussion ensemble, clarinet choir, brass quintet, recorder group and saxophone quartet). These instruments play a vital part in the life of the chamber and Symphony orchestras, as well as larger wind groups and the Contemporary Ensemble. Members of the department have the opportunity to audition each year for a chance to perform a short recital in a Solo Instrumentalists’ Concert held annually in a major London venue.
Individual vocal tuition is available both for first study singers and other instrumentalists who express an interest.
Classes from visiting artists have included:
Alison Balsom and Mark David (trumpet), Nigel Black and David Pyatt (French horn), Byron Fulcher and the RCM trombone ensemble, Jo May (African percussion), Owen Gunnell (marimba), Ian Wright and Henry Baldwin (timpani), Jonathan Kelly and Chris Cowie (oboe), Jill Crowther (cor anglais), Mark van de Wiel, Andrew Marriner and Howard Klug (clarinet), Robert Wynn and Keith Bragg (flute).
Kevin Hathway – Head of Wind, Brass, Percussion, Voice & Harp
