Three pianists from the UK have qualified to compete in the 17th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition. All three are Purcell School alumni!

Kausikan Rajeshkumar studied with Tessa Nicholson at The Purcell School. A Cambridge University graduate, he is currently preparing with Ian Jones for his master’s exams at the Royal College of Music, whilst continuing his studies with Eliso Virsaladze at the Scuola di Musica in Fiesole and with Leonid Margarius at the ‘Incontri col Maestro’ Piano Academy in Imola. He has won prizes in the Darmstadt Chopin Competition, the Weimar Liszt Competition, the Parnassos Competition in Mexico, the Maria Herrero Competition and others. He has performed at the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Saragossa Auditorio, festivals in Leeds, Edinburgh and Oxford and on BBC radio and television.
Ashley Fripp was a pupil of Emily Jeffery at The Purcell School, and is currently studying with Ronan O’Hora and Richard Goode for his diploma at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Carnegie Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Royal Festival, Barbican and Wigmore halls (London), Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Salle Cortot in Paris. He has won prizes in the Hamamatsu and Birmingham competitions, the Royal Over-Seas League Piano Competition and the Concours Européen de Piano in Normandy.
Alexander Ullman was taught by William Fong at The Purcell School and Leon Fleisher, Ignat Solzhenitsyn and Robert McDonald at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Thanks to a scholarship from the Young Classical Artists Trust, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music. He has won the Liszt Competition in the Netherlands (2011) and the Tunbridge Wells (2012) and Lagny-sur-Marne (2013) competitions. He has given recitals in Europe, Asia and America, and with the Dover Quartet he toured Europe in 2014. He has performed with such renowned orchestras as the Southbank Sinfonia and Budapest Radio Orchestra.
The prestigious Competition runs from 1st to 20th October, and will open with a special concert featuring Martha Argerich. 160 pianists from 57 countries took part in the preliminary stages, and 84 qualified to compete in the four-round competition in October. Thanks to online broadcasting, all of the auditions are available online, via the Competition web page chopincompetition2015.com, mobile app for iOS and Android (Chopin Competition), and Youtube channel (youtube.com/chopin2015).
