For quite a few years now, our Art Department Technician, Alison Humphrey has been knitting little hats for the Innocent Big Knit.  This year, she went a step further and started a knitting club at Purcell where pupils could have fun and learn to knit for a great cause.  The aim was to knit as many hats as possible because every time Innocent sell a little bottle wearing a knitted hat, they will donate 25p to Age UK, to help keep older people warm and well over winter.  The colder months can be tough for a lot of people – as many as 25,000 older people’s lives are at risk because of the cold.

Alison said “We quickly gathered quite a bundle of knitters, mostly from the Juniors and started learning the basics, we then progressed to stocking stitch and even incorporated stripes into our hats!  There have been plenty of dropped stitches and tight knitting (and loose knitting too), but since September each member of the club has knitted at least one hat to add to our collection for Age UK (and one hat to keep for themselves!).  Our Bursar Aideen McNamara also got involved and contributed a number of lovely blue and pink hats, with assistant Bursar Jo Wallis adding some pompoms! This year our combined effort has resulted in a total of 200 hats!   We were so inspired by knitting all our little hats, we are going to try and knit human sized versions next term!”
