Jazz

Picture
Over the past decade there has been an expansion of interest and involvement in jazz throughout The Purcell School.  There are nine first study jazz players and a growing number of students opt to study jazz improvisation as their second study.  The band performance programme has expanded to meet the regular performing needs of all of these players.  The instrumental teachers follow a syllabus that links repertoire and improvisation techniques to the ensembles.  There are also masterclasses and collaborations with professional jazz musicians including Chris Batchelor, Mark Lockhart, Liam Noble and Jim Hart.

Bands perform in lunchtime concerts, in concerts and tours throughout the country and in major London venues including Pizza Express Dean Street and Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House.  Jazz bands play an important role in the outreach programme, and often take part in jazz workshops in local schools and in the wider community.
